Speranța Shelter

their story

A closer look at Speranța Shelter

On the edge of Bucharest, Adăpostul Speranța is a home for more than 500 dogs who needed someone to stop and help. Some arrived injured or abandoned; others are older, traumatised, or living with disabilities. The shelter gives them food, veterinary care, room to play, and the patient attention needed to feel safe again. For dogs who use mobility carts, recovery is not an afterthought: the team has built a veterinary clinic and physiotherapy facilities around their needs. Speranța's work began more than 20 years ago and now stretches beyond the shelter gates. Its rescuers respond to dogs in distress where space allows, help them heal physically and emotionally, and work to find responsible homes. Through its 'Mesagerii Speranței' training and desensitisation programme, dogs who have known fear can gradually learn to trust people again. Adoption events and education help neighbours see these dogs for who they are, not what happened to them. The team also tackles the causes of abandonment. Alongside its shelter work, it runs free sterilisation campaigns with local communities. The programme includes dogs and cats, but the shelter at the heart of Speranța is a real, working home for hundreds of dogs. Every dog cared for here deserves a life with comfort, dignity and, if possible, a family of their own.
